Rangoli Dance Company

Malathi Iyengar, Artistic Director

Malathi takes audiences on great adventures with mythological works in performances such as Ramayana (2000-2001) and more recently Patanjali (2007). Her performances also include folkloric dances of celebration (Raas, Holy), contemporary themes, Creation Myth (1995), Planting a Sequoia (2004)) and traditional somatics in Bharatyam Natyam (Tilanna).

I started working with Rangoli when I moved to California and attended UCLA in 1992. Malathi, a passionate, sensitive woman, devoted to the craft, approached me in expanding her choreography into modern dance. The issue at stake was the integrity of the Indian aesthetic in what was becoming a post modern genre. We then explored modern African movement to the fierce rhythms of the tabla, and in exchange I started learning Indian Bharatyam Natyam and folk. I continue to work with Rangoli, an experience I equate with the greatest qualities of spirit, devotion, humility and humanity.
