Musical Theater

Musical Theater was a very easy transition for me. I had a natural ability to dance and practiced singing with radio and recordings, which at the time, never integrated. My first musical theater experience was in a Spring Concert in my final year of Junior High School. Inspired by Black Broadway and viewing my first theater performance of “The Wiz”, I continued my musical theater education by sneaking into the Broadway theater houses and taking notes. My graduating performance included works from “West Side Story”, “The Wiz” and “Bubbling Brown Sugar” among others.

Next Wave Festival

This eventually led to a large production in New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music: Next Wave Festival titled “The Warrior Ant”. “Ant” was an attempt of fusing many multi-cultural performing arts, media and theater, including puppetry, into a social commentary and entertainment experience. Directed by Lee Bauer, with music by Bob Telson and choreographed by Pat Hall-Smith (Afro-Haitian), with whom I continue to study.

The Dark Star of Harlem

LaMama Theater E.T.C in New York housed the first production of “The Dark Star From Harlem” a tribute to Josephine Baker. “Dark Star” written and directed by Glynn Borders with Kim Grier’s choreography, offered a compact retrospective of the life of Josephine Baker. The successful run of “Dark Star” segued into a cabaret theater production at the infamous Maxim’s supper club.
